0:00: Hello, my name is Tracy Malumba, and I’m a doula, an infant feeding and sleeping specialist here at Oona.
0:05: Hand expression is a great way to get milk out of the breast and encourage milk production without the use of a pump.
0:12: Before you get started, you’re going to want to wash your hands and find a quiet and private place where you feel the most comfortable and relaxed.
0:19: An easy way for you to Remember how to hand express is to remember the acronym PCR.
0:26: So, you’re going to want to make a C shape with your thumb and fingers, and then you’re going to place your thumb and finger on your breast, leaving about 2 fingers away from the nipple.
0:36: Then, of course, you’re going to PCR, you’re going to push back, compress and release.
0:42: You may want to also frequently change the positioning of your fingers during your compression session so that you’re completely emptying the whole breast.
0:52: And this will help move the milk forward and out of your breast tissue.
0:56: Hand expression can also be a really helpful tool when breastfeeding.
1:00: You can simply express some of your milk onto your nipple to help entice baby before latching your baby onto your breast.
1:08: In those early lactation days, you may notice that instead of sprays, you’re getting little drops of milk when you’re doing your breast compressions, and that is completely normal.
1:19: You can just go ahead and take a spoon or a cup to collect those little drops for your baby.
1:24: If you’re looking for more infant feeding support, please do not hesitate to reach out to us and book a consultation with one of our lactation consultants.
