Description

Please note: this class is held ONLINE in a live-taught format. We keep our classes small to allow for a more personal experience.
Cameras must be on for this class.
Cher Curshen, Registered Psychotherapist, will lead kids aged 7 to 12 in this expressive, mindfulness-based arts therapy workshop. Connecting the imagination to the body through art opens the door for the expression of feelings that children can’t easily vocalise with words in a safe space. In this class children will collaborate to make a ‘Tree of Hands’ by decorating their own individual hand tracing, which will later be arranged into a larger work that incorporates everyone’s designs to form the leaves of a tree.
Art is a natural language for children. It can help them make sense of and express their thoughts and feelings and improve coping.
Through the process of creating art within a supportive, therapeutic setting, a child can:
  • Explore their feelings
  • Process emotional conflicts
  • Build self-awareness and increase self-esteem
  • Reduce stress and anxiety
This hand/arm tracing art therapy activity will give children an opportunity to see themselves more positively and will provide positive reinforcement, emotional release and strengthen their self understanding.
Cher aims to foster a sense of unity and connection while being fun for children, bringing joy while creating a meaningful sense of self and togetherness.
What to expect in this workshop:
  • Children will be tracing one of their hands and then decorating their tracing however they like.
  • There will be ample opportunity to share for those that choose to do so.
  • The workshop environment will foster a sense of safety, inclusivity and respect.
  • Parents do not have to participate but are welcome
  • Ability to take a photo of the drawing after the workshop, which can be emailed to Cher
Cher will then create the Tree Of Hands which will be shared with you at a later date so the children can see their combined art piece!
What your child will need for the workshop:
  • 8.5” x 11” plain white paper. (Have some spare just incase)
  • Coloured pencils and a pencil sharpener
  • Oil Pastels and/or markers (we recommend skipping the crayons as they tend to look a bit washed out in this type of activity)
  • Decorative papers/magazines and glue stick
Note: If you only have coloured pencils or markers, etc, that’s fine too! It’s just good to have options on hand so your child/children can decide what they want to use for their masterpiece.
I look forward to creating with your children! -Cher
